The supernatural city

Ask a Nottingham resident for a ghost story and most will be able to relay a local folklore even if they haven’t experienced a haunting. One of the most notorious venues for ghoulish activities is Ye Olde Salutation Inn. The city’s famous ghost walks start at the ‘Sal, and the huge number of chilling tales about this pub make it a wise choice. There have been reports of the spirit of a four-year-old girl wandering its caves, the ghost of a highwayman and poltergeist activity here.

Nottingham Castle nearby is said to be the residence of Nottingham’s most famous ghost, Queen Isabella. Isabella cheated on husband King Edward II with her lover Mortimer in 1330 and is said to still wander the underground passages of the castle where they were caught.

The Galleries of Justice sounds like a place that should be haunted and there are many tales of eerie sightings here over the centuries. Site of Nottingham’s courthouse and jail from 1375, organised ghost hunts pass through its aptly-named hanging corridor, criminal court and cells, the courtyard where prisoners were buried, caves and the chillingly-named pits! Paranormal sightings include civil war soldiers, a Victorian gentleman and old lady, and with a history of executions, punishment and torture, it’s unsurprising that visitors report feelings of peril and unease.

Go to the Old Angel Inn, a lively rock pub spooked by a singing ghost and the spectres of a one-armed-bandit and a policeman. The Old Angel was the site of two murders in the 1700s and was previously a brothel and a chapel. The spirit of a forlorn prostitute is said to wander the ancient caves below.

Many of Nottingham’s country houses and stately homes are believed to be haunted. 11th-century Clifton Hall hit the headlines in 2008 when its millionaire owner vacated the ancient school building after hearing eerie voices and knocking and seeing spots of blood appear and a girl pacing the corridors.
Â
Woolaton Hall is a popular stop on Nottingham’s ghost-hunting tours. This 16th-century residence has recorded every type of spirit phenomena, from whispering, footsteps and howling to poltergeist activity. Room 19 is said to be haunted by Lady Middleton, who spent the rest of her life here after falling down the stairs.

Newstead Abbey is home to the ghost of a Black Friar, who appears whenever the abbey is under threat, while Annesley Hall houses a White Lady apparition who died in childbirth.

People going to 14th-century former Royal hunting residence Bestwood Lodge have heard spooky voices in the cellar, reported sightings of a grey lady and other apparitions dressed in medieval clothes and heard children crying and a horse and carriage pull up.

Be a believer or a bit dubious, these stories and hundreds others fit well with Nottingham’s folklore heritage. Tales passed down through generations or spirits of departed residents? Get on a ghost tour and decide for yourself!

A city for all sports

If your idea of a lively weekend is walking between bars, you’re in danger of dismissing a major part of Nottingham’s make-up. The city has always had a rich spots heritage, nurturing countless world-class athletes and with more sports facilities per head than any other European city.

Three high-profile addresses; Nottingham Forest FC, Notts County FC and Trent Bridge cricket ground; sit in sight of each other on Trent Bridge.Â

Nottingham Forest FC was founded in 1865 and is the city’s most successful football team. Their most prosperous spell, under the late Brian Clough, won them the football league, two European cups and four league cup titles between 1975 and 1993. Current stars include Paul McKenna and Dele Adebola, while its roll-call of former players features Stuart Pearce, Trevor Francis and Stan Collymore.

Notts County FC, founded in 1862, is the oldest professional football league club in the world and plays at Meadow Lane. The team has had several spells in the top division and hold the record for the most promotions (12) and relegations (15) in the history of the league. Famous former Magpies include Jeff Astle and Sol Campbell.

Perhaps the city’s most famous sports venue is Trent Bridge cricket ground, home to Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club and host of Test, One-day International and County cricket matches. Established in the 1830s, Trent Bridge is the world’s third oldest Test ground and a world-famous cricketing landmark. Just one of the many highlights in its history was hosting the first match of the first five-match Test series in England.
If you are more of a competitor than a spectator, dip your toe in at the National Watersports Centre. This impressive 270-acre parkland has a 2000-metre regatta lake, 700-metre white water canoe slalom course and waterski lagoon with ski jump and cableway.

Nottingham has produced many world-famous sporting legends, but arguably the most celebrated are ice dance Olympic and World Champions Torvill and Dean. Nottingham’s original 1939 ice stadium, and the pair’s old stomping ground, was demolished in 2000 and replaced by the Trent FM Arena. The Arena is home of the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team if you’d rather watch ice brutality than attempt a lycra-clad pirouette!
Tennis is another sport that puts Nottingham on the world stage. The old Open tournament raised the profile of the sport in the city and the city’s profile in the world as a warm-up for Wimbledon contenders. Now home to outdoor grass championship, the AEGON trophy, Nottingham has been thrust once more into the sporting spotlight.

If your sports plans only stretch to a pub crawl, the city is buzzing with bars following the scores so you can at least sound athletic in conversation. The Southbank Bar by Trent Bridge has a lively atmosphere and sits at the heart of the city’s live sport action. Â

A pub riding on more than its sports coverage is The Approach. This over-dressed modern art bar with slouchy seats parked in front of big screens makes this local somewhere you can keep on top of the results and happily hang around after full time regardless of the final score.

A city with hidden depths

When you come to Nottingham, you’ll become immersed in the clubs and bars around its vibrant city districts. But you may not be aware of another world of interest deep underground.

Underneath the city nestles a complex network of over 200 man-made caves. In fact, Nottingham was originally known as ‘Place of Caves’, with records dating this underground existence back to 900AD. Between the 11th and 19th centuries these cubbies were even used as crude housing until a law banned this practice.

The soft Sherwood sandstone beneath Nottingham made it simple for people across the ages to hand-carve cellars for store rooms, factories and dwellings. Although there’s a major project underway to map out these hidden networks, it is thought that up to 50 caves remain unexcavated and a further 75 could have been destroyed by city redevelopment.

You’ll find many signs of Nottingham’s real underground scene scattered throughout the city centre. The Broadmarsh Shopping Centre conceals the most prominent example, with a whole “City of Caves” tucked underneath. Nowadays, you can explore its ancient corridors and reminisce about their history reconstructed using clues from artefacts found inside. Your journey starts at the Medieval Tannery, a legacy of Nottingham’s leather trade way back in 1250.

An exhibit of Drury Hill, site of some of the 19th century’s worst slums, recreates the appalling conditions endured by entire families living in single rooms without sanitation. You will also see evidence of the caves’ most recent calling – Second World War air raid shelters. Explore the subterranean existence of those seeking refuge from the barrage of 500 bombs that fell directly upon the city during the blitz.

Hot-step over to the Castle for more man-made caves and secret passageways from medieval times. Mortimer’s Hole is Nottingham’s most famous underground structure, a vertical shaft from Castle Rock dropping into a tunnel leading to Brewhouse Yard. Local legend dates it back to 1330, when a group of conspirators infiltrated Nottingham Castle to capture the Earl of Mortimer, lover of Queen Isabella.

The Park boasts seven storeys of subterranean steps and passageways down to Park Tunnel, a hidden thoroughfare for horse-drawn traffic going to Derby Road. But the main use for the caves was as beer cellars. A great example can be found at the Flying Horse Hotel, where three caverns are linked by an arch-shaped tunnel. Peek below Elizabethan mansion Wollaton Hall and you’ll see its own wine cellars adjoin an ancient tunnel linking it to Wollaton Village – perhaps a transit route for goods.

An exceptional example of how Nottingham’s caves were designed for purpose is found on Derby Road, where you’ll see one with a 20-foot ceiling for a wagon-makers workshop.

To see the natural caves which may have inspired locals to carve out their world underground, head to Creswell Crags near Sherwood Forest. This historic limestone gorge conceals evidence of life during the Ice Age, Britain’s only examples of cave art and 120,000 year-old signs of woolly mammoths, reindeer, bison and rhinos.

However much you do in Nottingham, without a visit to the caves, your visit will have barely scratched the surface.

Nottingham – the city that has it all!

The UK is home to many vibrant and exciting places that claim the title of ‘party city’ but one stands head and shoulders above the rest: Nottingham is a city that offers a wide variety of attractions and one that has become establishes as a premier location for those looking for the exciting side of life.

Given its central location – the city is well served by road, rail and air – it is no surprise that Nottingham is held in such esteem, and with a rich history steeped in folklore and legend the mystique of this fabulous town is further enhanced, but it’s not history that makes Nottingham stand out from the crowd – it’s fun!

Home to a widely eclectic selection of clubs and bars – from the very up to the minute Bar Circle, rated one of the city’s best nightclubs and always jumping to the more sedate and laid back nature of the famous Jongleurs Comedy Club, an institution in its own right – and places to eat, Nottingham is greatly enhanced by its diminutive size. This is not a sprawling city where you have to walk for miles between bars but a small and intimate location with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, a place where you can relax or party on to your heart’s desire.

Popular with hen and stag nights, Nottingham’s clubs offer great deals for parties and groups and the sheer variety means there will be something for everyone here. This is a university city after all, and catering for students means catering for all types!

The stag party might one to try the racy and thrilling Senoritas Table Dancing club, a place where inhibitions are left at the door, and for those drinks early in the evening there’s the comfort and familiarity of Yates’s Wine Lodge, while the lady’s may want to take in the dancing at Reflex, a superb and famed 80’s club where the music is always right up your street.

Nottingham is not just home to bars and clubs, and for those looking for a more engaging activity there is much more on offer: from karting at one of the many kart racing tracks or paint balling at a variety of venues, to many more exciting and fun filled activities, this is a city perfect for that stag weekend getaway. What could be more fun that partying at night and getting the adrenalin flowing through the day?

Accommodation in Nottingham is plentiful, and the choice is wide enough to accommodate any purse or wallet, while for those who wish to take a break from the action there is much here to satisfy the culture vulture.

Museums and galleries abound, and why not take in a well deserved pint in Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, said to be the oldest pub in the country and famous for a fine selection of ales and great food?

Nottingham really does have it all, and whether you are looking for an exciting, fun filled weekend break, an energetic night out or a relaxed meal and evening this is one city where you will find what you are looking for.

Reasons To Install Double Glazing In Your Nottingham City Centre Home

For anyone who is a new property owner in Nottingham city centre, there are a number of reasons for you to decide to install double glazing. City centres are bustling, jostling places and the benefits of fitting double glazing in Nottingham are both short term and long term.

Living in close vicinity of shops and bars, you are without a doubt sometimes going to want to block out the noise . Having double glazing installed in your Nottingham flat or house will make sure that the bustling nightlife which you love is going to be virtually inaudible on the days when you want some peace and quiet. People often move to the city to relish the nightlife and the closeness of the many amenities – but sometimes you would like to leave it outside and double glazing provides that option.

Many properties located in the city centre are old builds, and less energy efficient than more recent properties. The installation of double glazing in your Nottingham city centre house will ensure that the warmth that you do create will be kept inside making your home cosy and comfortable. Over recent years old and derelict buildings have been converted into flats and apartments. Keeping these kind of flats warm winter months and cool in the summer is usually a hard task. Once you have found your perfect Nottingham flat, by choosing double glazing this problem is usually eliminated. You don’t want to move into a new home and not be comfortable there!

How do I know which Double Glazing to pick?

There are a variety of choices you can make if you decide to fit double glazing in your Nottingham home or flat – from sash style windows to the more modern tilt and turn option. You can have a wooden frame but in the centre of Nottingham it might be practical to choose UPVC double glazing to ease a lot of the maintenance that will be due to inner city traffic (your double glazed windows will probably become very dirty if they are near a road).

By choosing a Nottingham based company, they can give you a quality service competitively priced.

Living in Nottingham city centre could be a great experience but it is important to remember that you will need to be able to lock the world out and keep the warmth in.
