Great work. I lived at Beighton and after the A3′s were taken off in 1958 we were left with a second class railway with dirty engines. I did not know at the time that it had become part on the Midland. The Directors became the highlight.
Brilliant archive footage, Kris 5*…Anymore video’s coming along?
Exactly..I took a train from Calais to Paris last year; which off hand is a good 100 miles journey. It took around an hour and cost less than a tenner RETURN. If I wanted to get to Luton from here in Nottingham, I’m paying £47 return and it takes over two hours; plus you get some snotty-nosed ticket bloke on the train.
We were the first to built a national rail network though, so we’ve had to work with that; plus France and Germany did have billions of £££ pumped in after the war.
Dead right, we’ve all heard “buy cheap, buy twice”. In the case of our railways it’s been “buy cheap, stay 20 years behind the rest”.
I refer of course to dieselisation, but they can’t even do overhead lines properly. The GNER Eurostars had to be restricted to 110 mph north of Kings Cross because our barely-sprung wires couldn’t take the upward pressure from the catenaries. I bet the Class 91 drivers had a good laugh about that.
Awesome Kris. I Have Got A Couple Of DVD`S With The Vic On. When It Was A Proper Railway!
You Got Any Footage On The Midland Mainline?
No to be cheeky, but are you old enough to remember the station when it was open? I just wondered if you saw it being closed and dismantled.
If I can recall correctly, I think they had a turntable somewhere in the station too.
I know I’ve lived in Nottingham all my life. The clock tower is built into the Vic. Centre. For some reason I thought he meant the station we know today, with the Victorian-looking design – that’s still there obviously.
Georgiahulse: I think you’ll find that this station is gone. A car park stands where the tracks were. You can still see the tunnel entrance though. And the clock tower and hotel are still there.
The station that is mooted for an upgrade is Nottingham Midland.
Great to see this old film of Victoria. Thanks for posting.
really sad should be put back the way it was
Same here…I wanted to see more of 1960s Nottingham life.
The station’s near enough the same today as it was then really, but I’ve heard they’re going to “upgrade” it soon
We really did need to move on from steam though…they said after it went in 1965, they’d convert all of Britain’s railways to electricity (like much of Europe has done). To this day we are nowhere near completing that goal.
sad its all gone
Lovely evocative footage
thank you for sharing
Loveley foootage – my only complaint abouT such films is that whilst some people love tossing off about steam locomotives many of us would like to see more of the station, the buildings, the people using the trains, the real life of the period. The obsession with steam (from the original film maker) means the film is cut when anything but steam is on view. The obsession with steam is almost sexual.
A great video. I particularly liked the bit where the Victoria North Signal Box was being passed by Victoria!
Yes. Suddenly all those lovely locomotives (which I thought of as MINE because they were nationalised)… were gone. Sob! As a kid I thought steam locomotives caused the weather, because they produced vapour and therefore clouds and therfore rain! Then the diesles came and proved me wrong…
superb stuff
thanks very much
the brand new brush 4 is a sure sign of things to come. little did we trainspotters realise how rapid the takeover would be
